What Is the Difference Between a Condo and a Townhouse?

While condos and townhouses may appear similar, their ownership structures differ significantly. In a condo, you own the interior of your unit and share ownership of common spaces — such as hallways, pools, or gyms — through the homeowners association (HOA). The HOA maintains these shared areas and charges monthly dues. With a townhouse, you typically own both the interior and exterior of the home, including the land it sits on. Townhouses usually have lower HOA fees but more maintenance responsibility. Choosing between the two depends on your lifestyle — condos offer convenience and less upkeep, while townhouses often provide more privacy and space.
